Drone Weight and License Classifications

United States – FAA Regulations

Weight-Based Registration:

1. ≤ 0.55 lb (250 g): Typically exempt from registration for recreational or basic educational use under limited exceptions, though they cannot be operated under Part 107.

2. > 0.55 lb up to 55 lb: Must be registered with the FAA regardless of recreational or commercial use, due to their higher potential risk.

3. > 55 lb: Require a more involved registration process and additional authorizations because of the increased potential for harm.

License Requirements:

1.Recreational Flyers: Must follow the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) guidelines and community safety practices, mainly for non-commercial activities.

2.Commercial Operators: Must hold a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, which involves age, language proficiency, physical and mental fitness criteria, and passing an Aeronautical Knowledge Test. Additionally, all drones used for commercial purposes must be registered, regardless of weight.

European Union – EASA Regulations

Risk-Based Categories:

Open Category: Designed for most recreational and low-risk commercial operations, subdivided based on weight and operational conditions.

Subcategory A1: For drones under 250 g (or classified as C0) and C1 drones under 900 g. Basic training or manual reading is required, with restrictions on flying over uninvolved people.

Subcategory A2: For C2 drones under 4 kg, requiring a Remote Pilot Certificate of Competency and adherence to specific distance rules from uninvolved people.

Subcategory A3: For heavier drones (C3/C4 or those under 25 kg without a class marking) where flights must avoid uninvolved people and urban areas, with mandatory operator registration and online training.

Specific and Certified Categories: For higher-risk operations beyond the Open category, including BVLOS flights or operations involving passengers or hazardous materials. These require detailed risk assessments, operational authorization, and in some cases, full certification of the drone, operator, and pilot.
